Capital punishment
The legal imposition of a death sentence upon a convicted offender for committing a capital crime or offence. Also called the death penalty, capital punishment is a controversial legal practise in many countries around the world, with most European countries banning it all together. Derived from the Latin word capitalis which literally means the head, capital punishment was originally carried out by severing the head from the body.
