A form of lighter-than-air flying machine. A rigid airship has a framework of aluminum alloy covered with fabric. The lifting gas is held inside the rigid framework in separate ballonets. The German Zeppelins of World War I, the British R-100 and R-101, as well as the U.S. Navy’s Los Angeles, Shenandoah, Akron and Macon and the German Graf Zeppelin and Hindenburg, are examples of rigid airships.

A form of liquid thermometer. A glass tube having an extremely small inside diameter is attached to a small reservoir completely filled with mercury. The volume of mercury in the reservoir is determined by its temperature. As the mercury absorbs heat, it expands and rises inside the tube. A temperature scale is marked alongside the tube, and, since the height of the mercury in the tube relates to the temperature of the mercury in the reservoir, the level of the top of the column of mercury can be marked to indicate the temperature.
Industry:Aviation
A form of liquid water which falls from the atmosphere. The drops of water forming rain are usually more than a half-millimeter in diameter. Precipitation having smaller droplets than that of rain is called drizzle.
Industry:Aviation
A form of lock washer made of spring steel formed into the shape of a cup. When the nut is tightened on a cup washer, the washer compresses, and its spring action holds pressure between the threads in the nut and those in the bolt. This pressure prevents vibration from loosening the nut.
Industry:Aviation
A form of machine screw whose head has several radial holes, holes that go across the head, through it. A bar can be passed through these holes and used to turn the screw.
Industry:Aviation
A form of magnetic particle inspection for small steel parts that have a high degree of retentivity. The part is magnetized, then removed from and inspected away from the magnetizing machine.
Industry:Aviation
A form of maintenance used on many types of complex machinery and equipment. Modular equipment is made in units (modules) that can be removed and replaced with another module in a minimum of time and with a minimum of equipment. The malfunctioning module can then be taken to a facility in which specialists using sophisticated equipment can isolate the problem and fix it. Modern turbine engines and most sophisticated electronic equipment are made to allow for modular maintenance.
Industry:Aviation
A form of manufactured wood product made of thin layers (plies) of wood veneer glued together. The grain of each alternate ply of veneer runs at 90° or 45° to the plies next to it. Plywood is strong, lightweight, rigid, and relatively inexpensive.
Industry:Aviation
A form of material whose molecules are able to flow past one another without destroying the material. Gases and liquids are both fluids. Fluids tend to conform to the shape of their container.
Industry:Aviation
A form of mechanical device that converts heat energy into mechanical energy. The two most widely used types of heat engines for aircraft are reciprocating engines and turbine engines.
