A form of hexagonal nut that has no provisions for locking it onto a bolt or stud.
Industry:Aviation
A form of hinged check valve that allows fluid to flow through it in one direction only. Fluid can flow in the direction which forces the valve off its seat, but it cannot flow in the direction which forces the flapper against its seat.
Industry:Aviation
A form of incandescent lamp that produces a maximum of infrared radiation (heat) with a minimum of visible light rays. Heat lamps are used for curing resins, drying paint, keeping food warm, and applying heat to parts of the human body.
Industry:Aviation
A form of incandescent lamp whose filament temperature is lower than that used to produce ordinary white light. The light produced by an infrared lamp has a large portion of its electromagnetic energy in the infrared range.
Industry:Aviation
A form of insulating material made by blowing a high-velocity stream of air through molten rock. Rock wool is fireproof, and the dead air space it contains makes it a good thermal insulator.
Industry:Aviation
A form of intergranular corrosion that forms in metals that are subject to a continuous tensile stress. The tensile stress separates the metal along the internal grain boundaries, and the corrosion acts at the apex of the cracks that form.
Industry:Aviation
A form of iron in which a supersaturated solution of carbon is dissolved in the iron. Austenite exists in the iron only when the iron is at a high temperature.
Industry:Aviation
A form of jet pump used to pick up a liquid and move it to another location. Ejectors are used in an aircraft fuel system to assure that the compartment in which the boost pumps are mounted is kept full of fuel. Part of the fuel from the boost pump flowing through the ejector produces a low pressure that pulls fuel from the main tank and forces it into the boost-pump sump area.
Industry:Aviation
A form of jet pump used to pick up one liquid and mix it with another. Eductors are used in some aircraft fuel systems to remove fuel from a vent-drain tank and return it to the main tank. Fuel from the boost pump flowing through the eductor produces a low pressure that pulls fuel from the vent-drain tank and carries it back into the main tank.
Industry:Aviation
A form of leading-edge flap used on the wings of some high-performance airplanes. When a Krueger flap is retracted into the wing, the leading edge has the shape that allows efficient high-speed flight. When the airplane is prepared for landing or takeoff, the Krueger flaps are extended, and they deflect the airflow into the trailing-edge flaps. The combination of leading-edge and trailing-edge flaps allows the airplane wing to develop its needed lift at the lowest possible airspeed.
