A force which acts between particles of matter to try to draw them together.
Industry:Aviation
A force which acts on a particle while it is moving along a path in a plane that is being rotated. For example, when wind blows along a path over the surface of the earth from the poles toward the equator, the rotation of the earth causes the wind to deflect to the right in the northern hemisphere and to the left in the southern hemisphere. It is the Coriolis force that causes the circular movement of the winds. It is also the Coriolis force that causes water to swirl in a spiral as it drains out the bottom of a bowl.
Industry:Aviation
A force which causes a material to stick to itself. Cohesion differs from adhesion, which is a force that causes a material to stick to some other material.
Industry:Aviation
A force which tries to cause rotation. A centrifugal moment is the product of the amount of centrifugal force acting on an object, multiplied by the distance between the object and the center of its rotation.
Industry:Aviation
A force within an object that tries to prevent any outside force changing its shape.
Industry:Aviation
A form of aerodynamic drag caused by friction between the air and the surface over which it is flowing. Parasite drag increases as the velocity of the air increases.
Industry:Aviation
A form of aircraft brake in which a series of metal or carbon disks keyed to slots inside the wheel rotate between a series of fixed disks keyed to the axle on which the wheel is mounted. Pistons in a series of hydraulic cylinders produce a force that clamps the rotating disks between the fixed disks. This produces enough friction to slow or stop the aircraft on which the brake is installed.
Industry:Aviation
A form of aircraft electronic navigation, commonly called RNAV, in which VORTAC stations can be electronically moved to any convenient location. A station that has been “moved” is called a way point, and the flight path goes from one way point to the next.
Industry:Aviation
A form of aircraft engine in which a propeller or fan is enclosed in a specially shaped shroud, or duct. A ducted-fan engine has a high degree of propulsive efficiency.
Industry:Aviation
A form of aircraft magnetic compass that has damping vanes on the float. These vanes keep the compass from oscillating when flying in rough air or when the aircraft is turned to a new heading.
