A measure of the signal strength needed to produce distortion-free output. The output must not have any excessive noise (unwanted electrical signal) in it, and the output must be electrically identical to the input, except for its higher voltage. A radio receiver with a high sensitivity can produce a usable output from a very weak, or faint, input signal.
Industry:Aviation
A measure of the speed at which an aircraft is moving through the air. Calibrated airspeed is found by correcting the airspeed shown on the airspeed indicator, the indicated airspeed (IAS), for any errors in the instrument or those caused by its installation (installation, or position errors). See position error.
Industry:Aviation
A measure of torque, or the rotation that is caused by a force of one pound acting one inch from the center of rotation..
Industry:Aviation
A measure of work in the kilogram-meter-second system of units. One joule is the amount of work done when a force of one newton moves an object one meter in the direction in which the force is applied. A joule is also known as a newton-meter. One joule is equal to 0.1020 meter-kilogram, or 0.7375 foot-pound of work.
Industry:Aviation
A measure used for cylinder wall surface roughness. One microinch is equal to one millionth of an inch (0.000 001 inch). If a cylinder wall is required to have a roughness of 20 microinches rms (20 μin rms), the highest and lowest deviation from the average surface is 20 millionths of an inch.
Industry:Aviation
A measurement of area of circular objects. One circular inch is the area of a circle whose diameter is one inch. One circular inch is equal to 0.7854 square inch.
Industry:Aviation
A measurement of area used for round electrical conductors. A circular mil is the area of a circle whose diameter is one mil, or 0.001 inch. One circular mil is equal to 0.7854 square mil.
Industry:Aviation
A measurement of luminous intensity in the International System of measurements. The candela is also known as the new candle, or the international candle.
Industry:Aviation
A measurement of speed based on the ratio of the speed of the aircraft to the speed of sound under the same atmospheric conditions. An airplane flying at Mach 1 is flying at the speed of sound.
Industry:Aviation
A measurement of the amount of surface of an object. Area is usually expressed in such units as square inches or square centimeters for small surfaces or in square feet or square meters for larger surfaces.
