A machine screw whose head has a rounded top, straight sides, and a flat bearing surface. Fillister-head screws often have holes drilled through the head so they can be safetied with safety wire.
Industry:Aviation
A machine that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. Mechanical energy is used to move conductors through a magnetic field, and voltage is induced into them as they cut across the lines of magnetic flux.
Industry:Aviation
A machine used for pulling or moving heavy loads. A cable is wound around a drum turned by a geared hand crank or some type of motor. The load is attached to the cable and is moved by it.
Industry:Aviation
A magnet produced by electrical current flowing through a coil of wire. The coil of an electromagnet is normally wound around a core of soft iron. This soft iron has an extremely low retentivity so it releases the material being picked up as soon as current stops flowing through the coil.
Industry:Aviation
A magnetic force used to remove magnetism from a magnetized object. The polarity of a coercive force is opposite to that which magnetized the object.
Industry:Aviation
A magnetic pole that will repel a like pole of equal strength, at a distance of one centimeter, in a vacuum, with a force of one dyne.
Industry:Aviation
A magneto having a single rotating magnet and cam, but two sets of breaker points, two coils, two condensers, and two distributors. A dual magneto is considered to be the equivalent of two separate ignition systems for an aircraft engine.
Industry:Aviation
A main category of visibility which includes the subcategories of prevailing visibility and runway visibility. Meteorological visibility is a measure of horizontal visibility near the earth’s surface, based on sighting of objects in the daytime or unfocused lights of moderate intensity at night.
Industry:Aviation
A maintenance check of a gas turbine engine in which the time required for the engine to accelerate from idle RPM to its rated-power RPM is compared with the time specified for this acceleration by the engine manufacturer.
Industry:Aviation
A maintenance check used to determine the condition of the piston rings and the valves in the cylinders of a reciprocating engine. An air pressure regulator holds a constant pressure of 80 psi on the input side of a calibrated orifice. The output side of the orifice is connected to the cylinder through an adapter screwed into a spark plug hole.
Air flowing into the cylinder, to replace that which leaks past the piston rings and valves, causes a pressure drop across the orifice. The amount of leakage is indicated by the difference in the readings of the two pressure gages on the tester.
The sound of leaking air heard at the carburetor air inlet indicates a leaking intake valve. A leaking exhaust valve is indicated by the sound being heard at the exhaust tail pipe. Worn piston rings are indicated by the sound of leaking air being heard at the crankcase breather.
