Founded in 1941, the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping (ACSM) is an international association representing the interests of professionals in surveying, mapping and communicating spatial data relating to the Earth's surface. Today, ACSM's members include more than 7,000 surveyors, ...
An analytical or mechanical phototriangulation adjustment in which photo-graphs are fitted together in such a way that radials are deformed as little as possible.
Industry:Earth science
(1) A ratio between the distance between two points on an image and the distance, projected orthogonally onto the plane of the image, between the corresponding points on the object. (2) A ratio between the angular size of an image as seen by the unaided eye and the angular size as seen with an optical instrument. If the distance or size is expressed in linear units such as millimeters, the ratio is called linear magnification. If it is expressed in angular units such as radians, it is called angular magnification.
Industry:Earth science
That configuration, in an optical system consisting of a mirror followed by a lens, in which the chief rays passing through the center of aperture of the lens converge to a point in image space. This type of optical system is used for taking photographs (of a model) having more or less arbitrary viewpoints, i.e., from more or less arbitrary perspectives.
Industry:Earth science
(1) Any device or structure over which or through which any excess of water or sewage beyond the capacity of the conduit or container is allowed to flow or go to waste. (2) The excess of water which overflows the ordinary extent of the water, such as the banks of a stream, the spillway crest or the ordinary level of a container. (3) The act of covering or inundating with water or other fluid.
Industry:Earth science
A map of a foreign region produced by the government or private agency of the foreign country.
Industry:Earth science
The point, in the orbit of a body moving in an orbit about the Sun, is closest to the Sun's center of mass. The time at which the Earth passes through its perihelion is the starting time for the anomalistic year.
Industry:Earth science
That part of geology which describes large-scale changes, such as folding and faulting, in the crust to the movement of large, continent-sized segments (called plates) of the crust, and which explains such changes in terms of the relative movements of the plates and the consequent pressure of plate upon plate.
Industry:Earth science
The outermost portion of the Earth's ionosphere, at a distance of 8 to 14 Earth-radii on the Sunward side, where the Earth's magnetic field ends and the Earth's ionosphere merges into the Sun's.
Industry:Earth science
An assemblage of the separate aerial photographs taken simultaneously by the several lens-systems of a multiple-lens camera into the equivalent of a single photograph taken by a camera with a single, wide-angle lens-system.
