A telescopic alidade, together with a frame for holding a photographic plate and a straight-edge, all mounted on a tripod. The photoalidade is similar in principle to the plane-table alidade. It allows lines indicating horizontal directions to be plotted and vertical or depression angles to selected features appearing on aerial and terrestrial photo-graphs to be measured. It is suited to the mapping of regions of high relief to be mapped with contour intervals of 15 or 20 meters, where trees or other obstacles hinder observation from the ground. It is used for making maps from oblique aerial photographs.
