Founded in 1941, the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping (ACSM) is an international association representing the interests of professionals in surveying, mapping and communicating spatial data relating to the Earth's surface. Today, ACSM's members include more than 7,000 surveyors, ...
That orbit a satellite would follow, under the influence of several forces, if all forces other than the gravitational attraction of the primary were suddenly removed (set equal to zero). The body would then follow an elliptical orbit about the primary. This orbit would be tangent to the actual orbit at the point where the perturbing forces were removed. Because most satellites follow orbits which are approximately Keplerian for short intervals of time, the actual orbit is often conveniently expressed in terms of an osculating orbit whose elements (size, shape and orientation) are changing slowly.
Industry:Earth science
That special case of the oblique Mercator map projection, for the mapping of a sphere onto a cylinder, in which the cylinder's axis passes through the point at longitude 180o + λ o and latitude 90o - φ o; λ o and φ o are the coordinates of the center of the region to be mapped.
Industry:Earth science
A circle whose interior is divided into sectors by radii; the proportionate size of each sector indicates the proportion the quantity indicated by that sector bears to the whole of which it is a component.
Industry:Earth science
The apparent vertical displacement of an object from its true location when viewed stereoscopically, because the object itself as well as the point of observation has moved.
Industry:Earth science
A collection of symbols on a transparent sheet which is to be laid over another collection of symbols so that the two collections appear as one. For example, maps showing original land grants or patents may be prepared on transparent tracing cloth so that they can be correlated with maps showing present ownership. Or an overlay may be used in compiling a manuscript of a map; such an overlay is described by a name telling what kind of symbols appear on it or how it is to be used, e.g., lettering overlay.
Industry:Earth science
A method of determining heights from vertical angles measured on the ground and from horizontal distances measured on a map constructed by stereocompilation.
Industry:Earth science
A geodetic network consisting of stations whose horizontal coordinates have been determined and at some of which the astronomic azimuth and, possibly, also latitude or longitude have been determined.
Industry:Earth science
An oral agreement between owners, establishing the boundaries dividing adjacent land.
Industry:Earth science
A datum derived in 1968 as an improvement on the Mercury 1960 Datum. A rotational ellipsoid (Mercury spheroid 1968) of the same flattening but with semi-major axis 6 378 150 meters long was used. The other defining constants (those relating coordinates in the datum to coordinates in other national or continental datums) were also changed.
