The convention adopted by the USA effective 28 November 1980 and making the following changes to the previously established rules governing tidal datums. (a) One uniform, continuous tidal datum was established for all tidal waters of the USA (including Commonwealths, territories and U.S. Trust Territories under jurisdiction of the USA). (b) It provided a tidal datum independent of computations based on the type of tide. (c) It lowered chart datum from mean low water to mean lower low water along the Atlantic coast of the United States of America. (d) It changed the National Tidal Datum Epoch from the period 1941 through 1959 to the period 1960 to 1978. (e) It changed the name Gulf Coast Low Water Datum to mean lower low water. (f) It introduced the tidal datum of mean higher high water in regions of predominantly diurnal tides. (g) It lowered mean high water in regions of predominantly diurnal tides.
