Founded in 1941, the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping (ACSM) is an international association representing the interests of professionals in surveying, mapping and communicating spatial data relating to the Earth's surface. Today, ACSM's members include more than 7,000 surveyors, ...
A method of solving the partial differential equations governing the motion of a body moving under various forces (particularly gravitational forces) by first solving the equations for a simple field and then solving the equations for the effects of the differences between the actual field and the simple field.
Industry:Earth science
The quantity 1/σ, in which σ is the standard deviation of measurements.

Laying out the plans for a structure on a large, level surface and assembling the parts of the structure according to the plan (and often on the plan). Surveying procedures have been used frequently to ensure the proper alinement of parts of the structure. This kind of surveying is usually classified as engineering surveying.

In electromagnetic distance-measuring instruments, the difference between the modulating frequencies actually obtained from an oscillator and the frequencies required for a correct measurement of distance.

(1) A method of finding complete asymptotic expansions for integrals of the form I(x) = ∫ (g(z) exp(x f(z))) dz as x approaches infinity. Integration is carried out along a line of steepest descent. (2) A method of solving a system of linear equations by starting off with an initial guess at the value of the unknown vector, and the making successive corrections by taking the gradient of the residual sum of squares and taking the correction in the direction of steepest negative gradient. The method has been widely used in the method of least squares.
Industry:Earth science
A topographic map on which elevations are shown. Sometimes called, erroneously, a hypsometric map. Called a hypsographic chart when it has the features of a chart.
Industry:Earth science
A marsh whose surface is covered and uncovered by the flow of tidal waters.
Industry:Earth science
(1) The product of mass and velocity. This is a vector and has the same direction as the velocity. (2) The product of mass and speed.
Industry:Earth science
A measurement from the marker identifying one control point on the ground to the marker identifying another control point on the ground. The definition given is the original version. It will fit actual practice better if mark is substituted for marker in it.

(1) The line of constant longitude at the center of a graticule. The central meridian is used as a base for constructing the other lines of the graticule. (2) The meridian used as y-axis in computing tables for a State Plane Coordinate system. The central meridian of the coordinate system usually passes close to the geometric center of the region or zone for which the tables are computed but, to avoid using negative values, is given a large positive value which must be added to all x-coordinates. (3) That line, on a graticule, which represents a meridian and which is an axis of symmetry for the geometric properties of the graticule.
