A mirror reflecting light or other radiation mostly from the surface farther from the source. In non-technical writing, mirror means a rear-surface mirror unless otherwise unless otherwise stated. A highly reflecting, metallic coating is placed (usually by chemical deposition) on one surface of a transparent material like glass or quartz. A tough coating, usually black, is then painted over the metal to protect it from corrosion and wear. For use in some optical systems, rear surface mirrors are made by evaporating a metallic coating onto the rear surface.
