Industry:Earth science
A device combining two different parts of a light wave in such a way as to cause interference between the separate parts. The type most used is the Michelson interferometer, in which a single beam of light is split into two parts which are sent over different paths and are then recombined. The Mach-Zender interferometer is a variant of the Michelson interferometer: the medium whose properties are to be examined is inserted in one of the two paths in a Michelson interferometer. Optical interferometers of the Michelson and Fabry-Perot types are used in geodesy for measuring short distances precisely, for measuring the rate of fall of freely-falling prisms, and for measuring flexure in the supports of pendulum apparatus.

A contour line made thicker to distinguish it from the contour lines on either side of it, and occurring at a multiple of the basic contour interval. Depending on the size of the contour interval, index contour lines are drawn as every fourth or fifth contour line, and usually with the corresponding elevation shown in a gap in the line. Sometimes incorrectly called an index contour.
