In particular, a type of quarter meter pendulum made of Invar and used by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey beginning in 1920, when it replaced the bronze pendulum for the Survey's measurements of gravity. An Invar pendulum is subject to magnetization but has a coefficient of thermal expansion about 1/15 that of the bronze pendulum it replaced.
