A surveyor. The term is no longer used in English except when it is used to denote a surveyor in ancient times e.g., an Egyptian or Roman surveyor. It may be used if there is a reason to distinguish a land or similar surveyor from other types; the English word surveyor originally meant a steward, a person who kept track of property.

(1) The slope of the line drawn between two points on the surface of and in the direction of flow of the liquid in a conduit. (2) The rate of change of pressure head. (3) The ratio of the loss in the sum of the pressure head and position head to the distance of flow. In open channels, it is the slope of the water's surface and is frequently considered parallel to the invert. In closed conduits under pressure, it is the slope of the line joining the elevations to which water would rise in pipes freely vented and under atmospheric pressure. A positive slope is usually one which drops in the direction of flow. In dikes, embankments, earth-dams and earth-structures retaining water, it is the line of saturation to the earth.
Industry:Earth science
A variation of a forward contract that has essentially the same basic definition but with some additional features, such as a clearing house guarantee against credit losses, a daily settlement of gains and losses, and an organized electronic or floor trading facility.
Industry:Earth science
The measurement of gravity using a gravimeter mounted in an aircraft. If the instrument is carried in an airplane, the Eötvös correction is very large. This difficulty has been avoided by making the measurements from a blimp.
Industry:Earth science
A departure from constant geoidal height.

An alphabetical list of names of places, giving for each name the kind of place (city, river, mountain, etc.) and the geographic or grid coordinates of the place. Some gazetteers also give the approximate populations of cities, town and countries. However, a gazetteer giving more than the minimal amount of information is usually called a geographical dictionary or geographical encyclopedia.
