A leveling instrument designed by G.M. Goulier to keep the line of sight level by having it pass through a prism mounted on a pendulum having a Cardan suspension. It was a forerunner of the present day, automatic leveling instrument.
Industry:Earth science
An instrument which measures the rate of change of some physical quantity with distance, in some specified direction or set of directions. The quantity measured is usually specified as part of the name of the instrument, as, e.g., gravity gradiometer.

A map produced by applying drawing three meridians so that each passes through one of the three major continental regions (North and South America, Europe and Africa, Asia and Australia) dividing these regions from each other by suitable meridians, and applying Werner's map projection to each lobe thus obtained. New meridians are chosen as desired to keep the central line approximately in the center of the region.
