A compact surveying instrument for measuring horizontal angles and bearings, consisting of a vertical cylinder divided horizontally into two parts: the lower edge of the upper part is graduated in circular measure and revolves on the lower part, which carries a vernier on its upper edge. That part of geodesy which concerns the shapes of the upper surfaces and bottoms of the oceans and similar bodies of water, and with the locations of points on those surfaces. By convention, marine geodesy concerns itself only with the average positions of the upper surfaces. The instantaneous positions are the concern of navigation and physical oceanography. The oceanic bottoms are also the concern of oceanography and their determination is called hydrographic surveying or hydrography in that science. Other, broader definitions of marine geodesy have been proposed.
