The difference ε between the actual value xo of a randomly varying quantity and the value xp expected from theory: ε ≡ xo - xp. Other names are residual, residual error and discrepancy. Deviation is not the same as error.
Industry:Earth science
An orthogonal, curvilinear coordinate system associated with a physical system and consisting of an axis t tangent to the instantaneous-velocity vector and an axis n normal to this vector to the left in the horizontal plane. A vertically directed axis z may be added to describe three-dimensional motions.

The curve between the switch and the frog in a turnout.
Industry:Earth science
On a leveling rod having two scales in the same units, the difference in readings between marks at the same height.
Industry:Earth science
An arrangement of points such that the set of equations for the location of an unknown point in terms of the distances and angles between known points and the unknown point does not have a unique solution. For example, the location of an unknown point in a given plane can be determined, in general, by measuring the angles from that point to three points of known location in that plane. A critical configuration is present if all four points lie on the same circle, or if the three known points lie on a straight line. Many critical configurations are possible in the arrangement of stations observing an artificial satellite.

A diagram drawn in a polar coordinate system.

cut
(1) The depth to which material is to be excavated (cut) to give the surface a predetermined slope. It is the difference in elevation of a point on the surface and a point on the proposed subgrade vertically below it. (2) The volume of material to be removed to give the surface a predetermined slope.
