ATIS is the leading technical planning and standards development organization committed to the rapid development of global, market-driven standards for the information, entertainment and communications industry.
A grouping of one or more network elements (at one or more sites) which provides network related functions, and is administered as a single entity. A single site may contain more than one network node. For the purpose of this glossary, a network node is considered synonymous with a network element, and is usually at a single site. This restriction simplifies the definition of the network node interface (NNI) and INI, which would not apply between network elements.
Industry:Telecommunications
A grouping of users who generate a majority of their traffic in calls to other members of the group. Note: The community of interest may be related to a geographic area or to an administrative organization. Synonym special interest group.
Industry:Telecommunications
A half-second burst of 1400 Hz applied to a telephone line every 15 seconds to indicate to the called party that the calling party is recording the conversation. Note: The recorder warning tone is required by law to be generated as an integral part of any recording device used for the purpose and is required to be not under the control of the calling party. The tone is recorded together with the conversation.
Industry:Telecommunications
A hand-held computer input device that generates signals that increment, i.e., slew, the position of a cursor on a video display. Note: A mouse is placed on a flat surface and moved manually in the direction in which it is desired to move the cursor. A mouse has momentary switches ("buttons") that may be finger-operated to trigger an event after the cursor is positioned correctly.
Industry:Telecommunications
A hard copy telephone directory listing of subscriber names, addresses, and telephone numbers. Note: White pages is associated with the residential subscriber listings in the standard directories distributed by the Bell System before divestiture. 2. An electronic information database that contains user names and their associated network addresses, in the manner of a telephone directory. Note: Electronic white pages usually contain additional information, such as office location, phone number, and mailstop.
Industry:Telecommunications
A header consisting of octets 4 to 8 (inclusive) of the frame (flags excluded from the octet numbers. )
Industry:Telecommunications
A hidden program in a computer that stores user-typed input or other input and sends this data to the originator. Keyboard recorders are used for stealing user identifications, passwords, and other sensitive information.
Industry:Telecommunications
A hierarchical organization in which a given node is considered to be an ancestor of all the lower level nodes to which the given node is connected. Note 1: The root node, i.e., the base node, is an ancestor of all the other nodes. Note 2: In a tree structure there is one and only one path from any point to any other point.
Industry:Telecommunications
A hierarchy consisting of an ordered repetition of tandem digital multiplexers that produce signals of successively higher data rates at each level of the hierarchy. Note 1: Digital multiplexing hierarchies may be implemented in many different configurations depending on (a) the number of channels desired, (b) the signaling system to be used, and (c) the bit rate allowed by the communications media. Note 2: Some currently available digital multiplexers have been designated as Dl-, DS-, or M-series, all of which operate at T-carrier rates. Note 3: In the design of digital multiplex hierarchies, care must be exercised to ensure interoperability of the multiplexers used in the hierarchy.
Industry:Telecommunications
A high degree of confidence by an individual, entity, or application that received data should be treated as valid and unaltered.
