A directional antenna that is composed of long-wire radiators that form the sides of a rhombus, the two halves of which are fed equally in opposite phase at one apex. Note: A rhombic antenna is usually terminated at the apex opposite the driven apex, which termination makes its radiation pattern unidirectional. It is bidirectional if the opposite apex is unterminated.
Industry:Telecommunications
A directory protocol that defines the exchange of requests and outcomes between user and system.
Industry:Telecommunications
A discrepancy between actual and desired characteristics of an item. An anomaly may or may not affect the ability of an item to perform a required function.
Industry:Telecommunications
A discrete aspect of the performance of a system by which it enforces security automatically on behalf of the System Manager and /or system users. Note: Access control, authentication, accounting and audit are defined as major security functions which can be broken down into "functional elements". The term is normally used at the requirements stage of a system life cycle, eg. In a System Electronic Information Security policy. See also: Mechanism, Trusted Function.
Industry:Telecommunications
A discrete packet, i.e., quantum, of electromagnetic energy. Note: The energy of a photon is h, where h is Planck's constant and is the frequency of the electromagnetic wave.
Industry:Telecommunications
A disk, recorded with optical technology, that contains full-length (2-hour) motion pictures for viewing on a personal computer or on a TV screen (through a set-top box. ) Note: A dvd drive can also be used to access data files on a CD or to play an audio CD-ROM or an audio compact disk. Also written DVD.
Industry:Telecommunications
A display device that creates characters by means of the action of electrical signals on a matrix of liquid cells that become opaque when energized. Note: A liquid crystal display may be designed to be viewed by reflected or transmitted light.
Industry:Telecommunications
A display technology with pixel resolution of 640 x 350, used with early personal computers. Note: EGA has been replaced by newer display technologies.
Industry:Telecommunications
A displayed list of options from which a user selects actions to be performed.
Industry:Telecommunications
A dissipative impedance-matched network, usually used at the end of a transmission line to absorb all incident energy. Note: The dummy load usually converts the incident energy to thermal energy.
